About Us

Ever since I started playing guitar, I’ve had an interest in the technical side of the instrument. I set up all my guitars myself, including rewiring them and installing new pickups, and built a few guitars from kits and parts. I took this approach with me when I studied music at university, focusing on production and engineering in addition to composition.

I started winding pickups in 2020, after failing to find a set of pickups for my 7-string guitar that had the specs I wanted. Since making that first set of pickups I’ve experimented with different winds and magnets, settling on the range of pickups shown here.

My approach to making pickups is to be traditional when it makes sense to be, and to use the best components whether they are “vintage correct” or not. To me, making an exact replica of a vintage pickup isn’t as interesting as making a pickup that captures the sound and style of a vintage pickup using modern components.

FAQ

Are your pickups wax potted?

As standard, all my pickups are wax potted in 100% paraffin wax. However, they can be left unpotted if requested.

I want an exact replica of a particular pickup. Can you make it?

All handwound pickups have a degree of variance due to the way they are made, so while I can make a pickup that is similar to another, there is no guarantee it would be exactly the same.

Also keep in mind that some pickups (the original “P.A.F.” pickups, for example) are machine wound, not handwound, and as such there will always be a difference in construction and tone when comparing them to a handwound pickup.

Why isn't there a shopping cart?

Since I make pickups to order, rather than keeping them in stock, I feel it’s better to have direct contact with the customer so I can make the pickup exactly how they want it, rather than choosing from only a few options on the website.

How does the order process work?

Send me as much info as you can about the pickups you want via the contact page. I’ll then respond with a price quote for the pickups themselves (this can take up to 3 days), as well as the cost of shipping, and an estimate of when the pickups would be completed. If you choose to go ahead with the order, I will then send you an invoice via Paypal.

What do you have against vintage pickups?

Absolutely nothing. I would just rather make a pickup that captures that sound in a way that isn’t restricted by using only what was used in the 1950s. Long-legged baseplates, for example, simply don’t fit in many modern guitars.
